THE TOWN
Hissar, or Hisarya, has 2 dozen thermal springs, with water between 24C – 49C, leafy parks and many spa centres & outdoor swimming pools. It is famous for its mild climate, clean air, and the healing properties of the mineral water. Because of its climate and hot mineral water, it attracts visitors all year round.
For history buffs, there are many sites of interest - remains of a small amphitheatre, the barracks of the Roman garrison, the foundations of a couple of the oldest churches in Bulgaria, as well as the best preserved Roman fortress in Bulgaria.
There are also many wonderful restaurants, the majority of which have beautiful gardens to enjoy.
THE AREA
Hissar is at the foothills of the Sredna Gora mountains, and there are many opportunities for hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding nature. Bicycles can be rented from the Gaitani Hotel in the next street.
Starocel is a 20 minute drive away - there you can find a Thracian tomb complex, and a state of the art Winery, with a tasting room which recreates the interior of the tombs.
We highly recommend a visit!
30 minutes driving will take you to the town of Plovdiv, which is the cultural capital of Bulgaria. There you will find the cobbled streets of the Old Town, full of architecture from the National Revival Period.
For those of you who don't drive, taxis are very cheap, buses are plentiful, & we can arrange transfers from Plovdiv or Sofia airport for 25euros or 60euros respectively (that's per car, not per person).
